Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Clerk of Works is to inspect the workmanship, quality, and safety of work on Kisii University's construction sites and report findings to senior managers. This role is crucial in ensuring that the construction projects adhere to the required standards and regulations, contributing to the overall success and integrity of the university’s infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

As a Clerk of Works at Kisii University, your responsibilities will include:

  1. Site Assessment and Feedback:
    • Assess construction sites and provide feedback for planning and scheduling the works program.
    • Monitor and report on the daily progress of work, including any constraints, restraints, or obstructions encountered.
  2. Logistics and Site Coordination:
    • Review and analyze site logistics arrangements, ensuring they are implemented effectively.
    • Collaborate with the contractor to arrange manpower, materials, and machinery to achieve planned activities.
    • Organize daily site meetings with site personnel to discuss progress and any issues.
  3. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed documentation of all site engineering activities.
    • Create daily work schedules and adjust them as needed to meet project deadlines.
    • Raise Requests for Information (RFI) with the project manager after reviewing the drawings.
    • Provide regular feedback to the project manager on site operations and processes.
  4. Health, Safety, and Compliance:
    • Ensure that health, safety, and sustainability policies and legislation are adhered to at the site level.
    • Evaluate operations during construction, optimize processes, and report findings to the project manager.
  5. Leadership and Training:
    • Direct engineering activities on site, assigning tasks and providing training and support to site personnel.
    • Liaise with the main contractor, subcontractors, and other professional staff to ensure smooth project execution.

Requirements for Appointment

To be considered for the Clerk of Works position at Kisii University, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualifications:
    • A Diploma in Building and Construction, Construction Management, or related disciplines such as Architecture, Design, Building Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Surveying.
  • Experience:
    • A minimum of six (6) years of working experience, with at least three (3) years in a Clerk of Works position, preferably in a Government Institution or Engineering Firm.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Excellent report writing skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, AUTOCAD, and ARCH CAD.
    • Membership in a relevant professional institute will be an added advantage.
